Ons glo dat God lank voor ons dit besef het, reeds besig was om ons verhaal te skryf.

Ons het mekaar reeds op skool geken. Daarna het ons paaie in verskillende rigtings geloop, maar op 'n manier het ons nooit heeltemal uit mekaar se gedagtes verdwyn nie. Elkeen van ons het sy eie lewensreis gestap, met mooi oomblikke, moeilike seisoene en lesse wat ons gevorm het. Vandag kyk ons terug en sien ons hoe God elke ervaring gebruik het om ons voor te berei vir die dag waarop ons paaie weer sou kruis.

Toe ons weer begin gesels, het die ure eenvoudig verdwyn. Ná maande se vriendskap en lang gesprekke het ons uiteindelik op ons eerste afspraak gegaan. Die plan was net een koppie koffie... maar vier uur later het ons steeds gesit en gesels. Dit was toe al duidelik dat tyd saam met mekaar eenvoudig anders werk.

Ons tweede afspraak was kerk toe. Dit was nie iets groot of dramaties nie, maar dit was die dag waarop ons albei besef het dat hierdie verhouding anders is. God was nog altyd die middelpunt van ons lewens, en ons het geweet ons wil hê Hy moet ook die middelpunt van ons huwelik wees.

Sedertdien het daar nie veel verander nie. Ons kan steeds ure lank praat, lag en stories deel sonder om agter te kom hoe laat dit geword het. Pa James het gereeld by die deur uitgekyk en gevra: "Het julle nie 'n sitkamer met 'n bank om op te sit nie?" Want daar het ons weer gestaan en gesels, lank nadat ons eintlik al moes groet.

Ben het 'n ongelooflike manier om selfs die gewone dae ligter te maak. Hy weet presies hoe om my knoppies te druk, my te laat lag en my te herinner om die lewe nie altyd so ernstig op te neem nie. En ek dink dit is een van die grootste geskenke van ons verhouding – ons lag ongelooflik baie saam.

Ons is nie net verlief nie; ons is beste vriende. Ons is mekaar se veilige plek, die eerste persoon met wie ons goeie nuus wil deel, en die een wat langs ons staan wanneer die lewe swaar raak. Wanneer ons saam is, voel ons vry om net onsself te wees, en juis daarin vind ons die mooiste weergawe van liefde.

Ons kinders is die hart van ons huis. Ons grootste prioriteit is ons geloof. God is die fondament waarop ons ons verhouding en ons huwelik bou, en ons gebed is dat Hy altyd die middelpunt van ons huis sal wees. Een van die mooiste verrassings was hoe natuurlik ons almal by mekaar ingepas het. Selfs ons honde het blykbaar besluit hierdie is hoe dit moet wees! Hulle het mekaar sommer ook aanvaar, asof hulle lank voor ons geweet het ons is bestem om een gesin te wees.

En toe gebeur iets besonders: ons het nie net verlief geraak op mekaar nie, maar ook op mekaar se families. Ons is met oop arms ontvang, geliefd gemaak en laat voel asof ons nog altyd daar hoort. Daardie liefde en aanvaarding is 'n ongelooflike seën waarvoor ons elke dag dankbaar is.

As ons terugkyk, besef ons dat God nooit laat was nie. Hy was besig. Besig om ons te vorm, ons harte voor te berei en die regte tyd te kies. Nou begin ons grootste avontuur nog—nie net 'n troue nie, maar 'n leeftyd waarin ons saam wil lag, saam wil groei, saam ons kinders wil grootmaak, saam die Here wil dien en elke dag weer mekaar sal kies.

En as ons iets oor die toekoms kan voorspel, is dit seker net dít: daar gaan waarskynlik nog baie vier-uur-gesprekke wees. Net hierdie keer hoef niemand ons meer te vra of daar 'n bank binne die huis is nie, want van nou af deel ons ons eie bank, in ons eie huis, waar ons nog vir baie jare saam sal lag, droom en gesels.
